The Truth About NBN – What’s Really Slowing You Down?

Scrolling through local Facebook groups like "6009 & 6010 Community Notice Board" or suburb community pages, you’ll often come across posts like:

"Afternoon everyone, recently moved to Dalkeith. Please recommend good internet service provider for the area. Cheers!"
"Can someone please recommend a tv technician? The streaming apps constantly hang... I can’t go back to free to air!! 🤣🤣"
"Hi, we are about to move to Duncraig North. We are currently with Telstra NBN in Scarborough. I'm wondering if people in the same area could recommend their NBN provider?"

It’s no secret - when your internet is playing up, it affects everything from your binge sessions to your Zoom meetings. But here’s the thing: the issue is almost never the NBN infrastructure itself.

Let’s break down what’s actually going on and how to fix it.

With many providers offering literally the same NBN infrastructure, the difference often lies in customer service and support. Look for a provider that not only knows about speed and uptime, but also cares about cyber protection, online safety, and your individual needs. It’s about finding someone you can connect with - who doesn’t hide behind "do-not-reply" emails or faceless chatbot messages, but instead offers real, helpful support when you need it most.

Most of the time, what people are experiencing isn’t the NBN being broken or slow—it’s a local setup issue. The truth is:

  • The NBN infrastructure is generally very reliable. The technology delivering the internet to your house - whether it’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)- has matured and works really well in most locations.
  • Check if your property is eligible for a free fibre upgrade. If you're on FTTN (Fibre to the Node), you may be able to upgrade to full fibre for free through the NBN Fibre Connect program. Just ask your provider.
  • If you're on HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial), you’re already on a high-speed network. This connection can handle speeds up to 1000/50 Mbps, so there's no upgrade path - because you don't need one!
  • 99% of the time, it’s the equipment or internal setup at fault. Old routers, dodgy Wi-Fi extenders, or outdated firmware can all contribute to sluggish internet.
  • Wi-Fi, even on a good day, has limits. A basic Wi-Fi setup, if not configured well, can only deliver around 70/40 Mbps speeds. That’s fine for general use but frustrating for households with multiple people streaming or gaming.
  • Even with great Wi-Fi, some TVs still struggle. Smart TVs - especially older or cheaper models—don’t always have the best Wi-Fi chips. If your streaming buffers even though your speed test looks great, that might be why. We can help with that.
  • Starlink is amazing—but not for suburbia. It’s a lifeline for farms and remote areas, but if you have access to fixed-line NBN, that’s going to be the more stable and faster option every time.

So if you’re seeing the dreaded "no internet connection" error pop up when you know you paid the bill - don’t panic. Don’t switch providers just yet. The issue might be something simple and fixable with the right know-how.

NBN & Internet FAQs

Q: Is the NBN network reliable?
A: Yes! The national NBN infrastructure is extremely reliable. Most issues occur inside the home.

Q: How do I know if I can upgrade to fibre?
A: Go to nbnco.com.au/upgrade and enter your address, or ask your provider to check eligibility.

Q: What is HFC and can it be upgraded?
A: HFC is a high-speed coaxial line connection. It’s not eligible for fibre upgrades because it already supports ultra-fast speeds.

Q: Why is my internet slow even though I have NBN?
A: The issue is most likely internal—old modem, poor cabling, or Wi-Fi limitations.

Q: How fast is my Wi-Fi supposed to be?
A: Basic setups can deliver up to 70/40 Mbps, but performance depends on your router, device compatibility, and placement.

Q: Why does my smart TV keep buffering?
A: Even with great internet, some TVs have weak Wi-Fi chips. Ethernet or better placement can solve this.

Q: Is Starlink better than NBN?
A: Starlink is fantastic in areas with no fixed-line service. But if you’re in town or a suburb, wired NBN will be faster and more consistent.
